1999 — The Birth
Shigetaka Kurita designs the first 176 emoji for NTT DoCoMo. 12x12 pixel grids. Crude. Beautiful. [emojipedia]
2010 — Unicode Goes Global
Unicode 6.0 standardizes emoji. Your iPhone smiley and Android smiley finally mean the same thing (mostly).
2015 — Word of the Year 
Oxford Dictionaries names 😂 the Word of the Year. Emoji isn't a trend — it's language.
2020 — Google Animates Everything 
Google launches Animated Noto Emoji. 720+ emoji get full animation. Static faces start dancing.
2025 — Unicode 17.0
